Rainbow LorikeetRainbow Lorikeets are birds that belong to the Trichoglossus genus. The rainbow lorikeet is a type of parrot. These colourful birds can be found on the eastern part of Australia and Indonesia near the coasts. Unlike all other parrots lorikeets don't eat seeds, their diet consists of nectar and pollen. The weight of rainbow lorikeets ranges from 75-160 grams. The wingspan of rainbow lorikeets is around 17 centimetres. Rainbow lorikeets can generally live for up to 20 years.
The skeletal system of the rainbow lorikeet is well designed for flight. It consists of many lightweight, hollow bones that allow the bird to fly. The rainbow lorikeet has an endoskeleton. Rainbow lorikeets have a large cranium, allowing a bigger brain. Thus, rainbow lorikeets are among the most intelligent birds. Rainbow lorikeets have strong feet with long, sharp claws that allow them to grab food and move swiftly along branches. The upper mandible of the rainbow lorikeets beak is curved downward and is not attached the the skull which lets it move freely and helps with biting pressure. The upward facing lower mandible is shorter than the upper mandible. Rainbow lorikeets have beaks unique to all other parrots that allows them to use their tongue to suck nectar from plants easier as this is their only food source. |
